SK8 the Infinity Season 1: A Thrilling Ride Through the World of Underground Skateboarding

SK8 the Infinity burst onto the anime scene in January 2021, delivering a high-octane blend of sports, friendship, and rebellion that captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Directed by Hiroko Utsumi and produced by Studio Bones, this original anime series aired from January 9 to April 3, 2021, on ABC and TV Asahi’s Animazing!!! programming block. With its vibrant animation, compelling characters, and a fresh take on the sports anime genre, Season 1 of SK8 the Infinity carved out a unique space in a crowded field, earning praise for its dynamic storytelling and heartfelt themes.

A Fresh Spin on Sports Anime

Set in the sun-soaked streets of Okinawa, SK8 the Infinity introduces viewers to “S,” a secret, no-holds-barred downhill skateboarding race held in an abandoned mine. The series follows Reki Kyan, a high school sophomore and passionate skater, who lives for the thrill of these dangerous races. Unlike typical sports anime protagonists, Reki isn’t a prodigy destined for greatness. Instead, he’s a relatable underdog whose love for skateboarding drives him, even if he lacks the raw talent of others. This distinction sets SK8 apart, offering a narrative that celebrates passion over perfection.

Reki’s life changes when he meets Langa Hasegawa, a transfer student from Canada with a background in competitive snowboarding. After Reki introduces Langa to “S,” Langa’s natural athleticism and snowboarding skills translate surprisingly well to skateboarding, making him an instant sensation in the underground scene. The series follows their growing friendship and their journey through the high-stakes world of “S,” where skaters compete in intense “beefs”—rivalries that push their skills and resolve to the limit.

A Colorful Cast and Dynamic Storytelling

SK8 the Infinity shines through its ensemble of colorful characters, each bringing unique flair to the series. Reki, voiced by Tasuku Hatanaka (Japanese) and Matt Shipman (English), is the heart of the show, embodying the joy and frustration of pursuing a passion without being the best. Langa, voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi (Japanese) and Howard Wang (English), is his reserved yet fiercely talented counterpart, whose growth as a skater mirrors his emotional journey. Their friendship, marked by mutual support and occasional tension, is a highlight, resonating with fans for its authenticity and warmth.

The supporting cast is equally compelling. Miya, a prodigious middle school skater, adds a layer of youthful arrogance tempered by vulnerability. Joe and Cherry, older skaters with a playful rivalry, bring humor and depth, while Shadow, a florist by day and bomb-throwing skater by night, injects absurdity into the mix. At the center of “S” is Adam, the enigmatic and flamboyant founder, voiced by Takehito Koyasu (Japanese) and David Wald (English), whose larger-than-life presence and dangerous charisma elevate the stakes of every race.

The series’ narrative balances adrenaline-pumping skateboarding sequences with character-driven drama. Episodes explore themes of self-worth, friendship, and the pursuit of happiness, particularly through Reki’s arc as he grapples with his limitations compared to Langa’s meteoric rise. The show avoids clichéd jealousy tropes, instead portraying Reki’s struggles with nuance, making his journey relatable to anyone who’s ever felt overshadowed.

Stunning Animation and Soundtrack

Studio Bones delivers some of its finest work in SK8 the Infinity, with crisp, fluid animation that brings the skateboarding scenes to life. The downhill races are a visual spectacle, blending dynamic camera angles, vibrant colors, and meticulous attention to skateboarding mechanics. Character designs by Michinori Chiba are expressive and distinct, capturing each skater’s personality, from Adam’s extravagant flair to Reki’s laid-back style.

The soundtrack, composed by Ryō Takahashi, perfectly complements the series’ energy, with a mix of punk, rock, and electronic beats that amplify the thrill of “S.” The opening theme, “Paradise” by Rude-α, is an infectious anthem that sets the tone for the show’s rebellious spirit, while the ending theme, “Infinity” by Yuuri, adds an emotional resonance that lingers after each episode.

Reception and Impact

SK8 the Infinity Season 1, spanning 12 episodes, was a surprise hit, earning a dedicated fanbase for its unique premise and heartfelt storytelling. Fans praised the chemistry between Reki and Langa, with many appreciating the subtle queer undertones that added depth to their bond. The series scored high marks for its animation (9.5/10) and skateboarding scenes (10/10) in some reviews, though some felt the ending was abrupt, leaving unresolved threads that hinted at more to come.

The show’s exploration of non-traditional sports anime themes resonated widely. As Polygon noted, SK8 stands out by focusing on a protagonist who isn’t the best, offering a refreshing take on the genre that celebrates the joy of participation over winning. Its blend of humor, heart, and high-stakes action made it one of 2021’s standout anime.

Legacy and What’s Next

SK8 the Infinity Season 1 laid a strong foundation for the franchise, spawning a comedy manga spin-off on Young Ace Up, a manga adaptation on BookLive!, and two stage play adaptations announced in July 2021 (though the second was canceled due to COVID-19). The series’ success led to the announcement of a second season and an original video animation (OVA), SK8 the Infinity Extra Part, released in Japan in March 2025, with a theatrical screening in January. The OVA features four slice-of-life stories focusing on the main cast, offering fans more of the characters they love while they await Season 2.

Final Thoughts

SK8 the Infinity Season 1 is a love letter to skateboarding culture, friendship, and the pursuit of passion, wrapped in a visually stunning and emotionally resonant package. Its ability to balance thrilling sports action with character-driven storytelling makes it a must-watch for anime fans and newcomers alike. Whether you’re drawn to the heart-pounding races, the vibrant cast, or the heartfelt exploration of self-discoveryVolatile, SK8 the Infinity delivers a ride worth taking. Catch it on Crunchyroll, Funimation, or Amazon Prime Video, and join Reki and Langa as they skate toward infinite possibilities.
